The CGIAR Initiative on Nature-Positive Solutions (NATURE+) visited Siaya County in Kenya to see advances in the My Farm Trees project, which seeks to incentivize – and pay farmers for – increasing native tree species on their land. The innovative project uses digital technology to monitor on-farm restoration, keep tabs on the health and development of trees, and pay farmers for their efforts. Participating farmers selected the species used in this project for the benefits they can provide; their desire to have specific native species on their land will be crucial to the project’s success.
My Farm Trees will help address food security, farm productivity, soil erosion and resilience to climate change. My Farm Trees is a clear example of how nature-based solutions benefit people and the environment in challenging times.
Project partners include Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, Global Environment Facility, IUCN, Kenya Forestry Research Institute and the county governments of the Kenyan counties Laikipia, Siaya and Turkana.
